The best black and white Android launchers give you more than a dark wallpaper. Text, icons, clock, selected state, focus accent, dividers, and system insets all need contrast. Monochrome icon processing also needs a fallback when an app lacks suitable artwork.

Minimalistic defaults to OLED black with off-white text and gray secondary information, while also providing light and system themes. Home can remain text-only or show small monochrome icons. A text or letter fallback appears when icon artwork cannot load safely.

Olauncher uses a sparse text interface that naturally works in monochrome. Daily wallpapers can add visual variation, or you can select a static dark background.
Choose it when a simple list is enough and you do not need icon processing or block-level styling.
Before Launcher for themes and icon styles
Before Launcher supports solid, gradient, and photo themes, along with text, icons, and icon packs. Its listing has included fixes related to black-and-white icon behavior.

Lawnchair supports icon packs, Material theming, fonts, and color controls on a Pixel-style grid. It is the strongest fit here if you want monochrome or themed icons while keeping widgets and a traditional Home.
Use an official stable build and test apps that do not provide a monochrome adaptive-icon layer.
Avoid the white-square icon failure
Android themed icons may expose a dedicated monochrome layer. Apps without one need a fallback. Tinting the whole adaptive background can create a solid white tile with no symbol.

Check contrast beyond Home
Test app drawer, search, long-press menu, Settings, hidden apps, focus profiles, delay screen, timer, and tool picker in both dark and light modes. Selected controls need shape or text changes in addition to color.

Choose the right monochrome level
Use text-only for the quietest screen, themed icons for recognition, full grayscale mode for a scheduled device-wide visual cue, and a block builder for editorial composition. These are separate controls.
A good black-and-white launcher remains readable in sunlight, at large font size, and when an app icon is poorly formed. The look should simplify recognition, not make every package into the same anonymous square.
Take screenshots in both themes and inspect them on another display. This reveals crushed dark tones, gray text that disappears, and images that only looked balanced at one brightness. Then test the live touch states, since a still screenshot cannot show whether the selected tool, pressed button, or active profile remains clear.
