To hide and unhide apps Android safely, first understand which layer is changing. A launcher can remove an app from its Home screen, drawer, and main search while leaving the package installed and its data untouched. The app may still open from notifications, links, widgets, recent apps, or Android Settings.
Hiding is organization, not a security lock.
Hide an app in a launcher
In Minimalistic, long-press an app in the drawer and choose Hide app, or open the Hidden Apps manager in Settings. The app should disappear from:
- Home favorites
- The ordinary app drawer
- Main launcher search results
- Profile-specific lists where hiding applies
The hidden package remains listed in the launcher's dedicated Settings page so you can reverse the action.
Unhide an app
Open Settings > Hidden apps, search the hidden list if needed, and choose Unhide. The app returns to the drawer and search. It does not have to return to favorites automatically; add it only if you want immediate Home access.
If the app is missing from the hidden manager, check Android's own app list. It may have been uninstalled, disabled, placed in a work profile, or hidden by the phone maker's launcher instead.
Hiding versus uninstalling
Uninstalling removes the package and normally clears its private app data. Hiding does neither. A launcher should never label hiding as uninstalling or imply that storage was freed.
If you want to remove an app, use Android App info or the Play Store. Some preinstalled system apps can only be disabled, which is another Android-level action with different consequences.
Hiding versus locking
A hidden app can still be opened from outside the launcher. Do not use launcher hiding to protect banking, private messages, photos, or work data from someone who has device access.
Use Android's device lock, app-specific authentication, private space, secure folder, or another platform security feature available on your phone. Test how notifications and backups behave with that feature.
Do not hide critical recovery tools
Keep Android Settings, the active launcher, phone, messages, emergency information, authenticator, payments, and other essential apps reachable. If you hide a system utility, confirm another route through Settings before closing the drawer.
A profile can remove an app from one context without hiding it everywhere. That is safer when you need the app at another time.
Handle uninstalled hidden apps
Packages change after installation, removal, and updates. A launcher's package-change receiver should refresh its cache and remove an uninstalled package from hidden records, favorites, folders, and distracting lists.
This prevents stale entries from crashing search or restore. If a backup contains a package no longer installed, restore should skip it or report it plainly rather than inventing a shortcut.
Check local backup contents
A launcher backup may contain package names from the hidden list. Store that JSON file somewhere you control and do not publish it casually. Package names can reveal services and interests even when no personal messages are included.
Minimalistic uses Android's document picker for user-controlled local backup rather than broad storage access or automatic cloud sync.
When hiding helps
Hide apps that clutter search but must remain installed, duplicated manufacturer apps you do not use, or entertainment apps you want outside ordinary browsing. Use a folder or profile when the app is still part of a recurring workflow.

A recovery check
After hiding your first app, immediately open the Hidden Apps settings and restore it. Then hide it again if you still want the change. This confirms the exit path before you organize a larger group.
Good hiding is reversible, local to the launcher, and honest about its limits. It removes visual access from a chosen interface; it does not remove the app, erase data, or create a secure vault.
Repeat that recovery check after restoring a backup or changing profiles, since those actions can alter which hidden set is active.
