An Android launcher should not receive Files and media permission just because it is the Home app. The permission should map to a feature you deliberately turned on, such as local backup or import.
Ask what breaks if you deny it
Install or configure the launcher with the permission denied first when possible. If the core Home screen still works, the permission is optional. Turn it on only when you need the specific feature, and check whether Android lets you use a narrower version of the permission.
Review the scope
- What data can the permission expose?
- Does the feature work locally or require a network connection?
- Can you revoke it later without losing the whole launcher?
- Does the privacy policy explain the feature clearly?
- Does the app request the permission at the moment the feature is enabled, or during first launch with no explanation?
Permission does not automatically mean collection
A permission grants capability. Collection depends on what the app actually does with that capability. That is why the permission screen, Data safety section, privacy policy, and network behavior should be considered together.
Minimalistic’s core launcher can run without ads, analytics, trackers, a login, or cloud sync. Optional features can still need functional permissions—for example, weather needs a network request and device-wide blocking can use Accessibility. That distinction is useful when you review any launcher: judge each permission by the feature that needs it.
What this permission can expose or control
Can expose files within the scope granted by Android.
When the request can make sense
May be used for local backup/import/export.
Red flag: A backup feature should explain what it reads and where it writes the file.
Permission test before enabling it
- Find the exact feature that stops working without the permission.
- Read the Android permission screen and the developer’s explanation.
- Enable it only if you want that feature.
- Disable the feature and revoke the permission later to confirm the core launcher still works when it should.
